This book is the second of a series of waterfall guide books authored by waterfall enthusiast Russell Dunn. The books are regional guidebooks, so there is no overlap or repetition of content from volume to volume.

"Catskill Region Waterfall Guide" covers waterfalls in the Catskills Mountains, the Shawangunk Mountains and the surrounding region. There are 76 waterfalls covered by this book vary from frequently visited to rarely visited, and from inaccessible or off limits due to posted property. The 76 waterfalls are grouped into multiple sections which simplifies coordination of visits.

Like other books in the series, this book isn't printed in color, so suffers accordingly in the ratings, but it's rich in content and historical notes. Like all his books, Russell Dunn has obviously researched his material thoroughly and the text is accordingly well written.

The illustrations, with the exception of the cover, are limited to black and white reproductions of old postcards, some engravings, and black and white reproductions of Topo! (National Geographic's software version of USGS topographical maps) contour maps.

The Bottom Line: While this book (and the other books in the series) aren't coffee table books, and the plates within aren't suitable for framing, the book is a solid guide to the waterfalls in the area it covers. If you look for waterfalls in the Catskills and Shawangunks, this book will be a valuable addition to any waterfall enthusiast's library.
