CONFIRMED
This waterfall has been confirmed by the World Waterfall Database, has been mapped and its height has been approximated but exact measurements have not yet been confirmed.
This is the waterfall most commonly known as either Kisangani Falls or Stanley Falls. The former name is actually accurate, but not commonly used. The latter is an outdated label stemming from the days of British exploration of the African continent. This cataract has commonly been misinterpreted to be Boyoma Falls, which occurs about 75 miles upriver from Kisangani. Wagenia Falls stretch the whole width of the Lualaba River and drop about 30 feet in two distinct but gradual steps. This waterfall is only significant for the volume of water in the river and for the fact that it impedes river navigation.

HISTORY AND NAMES

  • Also Known as: Kisangani Falls, Stanley Falls
  • Wagenia, Chutes is the Unofficial name of this waterfall

Wagenia Falls was originally known as Stanley Falls, and the nearby city of Kisangani was once Stanleyville. The names Stanley Falls and later Boyoma Falls have been applied to several cataracts along a 200-mile stretch of the Lualaba River that are often grouped together as one.

Our thoughts

Wagenia Falls is a globally significant waterfall because of its volume and width, but it certainly isn't a visually significant waterfall. Our rating system reflects the effect the incredible volume of the Lulaba River has, but in reality it isn't deserving of such praise (especially when the falls all but submerge themselves during the wet season).
