Shotgun Falls
   Clackamas County, Oregon, United States

This waterfall has been surveyed, mapped and measured in person by the World Waterfall Database.
Photo of Shotgun Falls Shotgun Falls is a very distinct Oregon waterfall, dropping over the distinct basalt formations which produce so many of the lower elevation waterfalls in the foothills of the Willamette Valley. The falls, plunging 96 feet along small Shotgun Creek, is the only cataract currently cataloged in the Molalla River basin. However, given the geology seen along nearby Butte, Abiqua and Silver Creeks, there are almost certainly more waterfalls in the area waiting to be found. Because Shotgun Creek drains from a fairly small area, the impressiveness of the falls will decrease as the year progresses, very possibly reducing to just a trickle during the late summer months. About 100 feet downstream from the falls is a 15 foot tall lower falls.

  • Shotgun Falls is the Colloquial name of this waterfall

Location and directions

From the intersection of Highways 211 and 213 near the town of Molalla, drive east through Molalla and turn right on Mathias Road, also signed for the Molalla River Recreation Area. Mathias makes a hard left and becomes S Feyrer Park Road and crosses the Molalla River in 2 miles. Bear right immediately after crossing the river and drive for 5 1/4 miles (now along South Dickey Prairie Road) and turn right, crossing the Molalla River again onto South Molalla River Road (follow the pavement rather than staying straight on the gravel road). Proceed another 5 1/2 miles to a wide turnout on the right shortly before a sheer cliff parallels the road. Park and walk up the road for 200 feet to the creek. A path leads along the right side of the creek to the falls in about 300 feet.

Shotgun Falls is shown in the center. Additional nearby waterfalls (if any) can be found in the list below.

Photography tips

During the winter months the spray coming off the falls will be problematic but as the volume drops it should have a negligible impact. The alcove harboring the falls is quite exposed and will see direct sunlight during the first half of the day, but should be well shaded by the late afternoon.
