Mystery Falls
   British Columbia, Canada

This waterfall has been surveyed, mapped and measured in person by the World Waterfall Database.
Photo of Mystery Falls Mystery Falls is one of the more significant waterfalls in the Whistler area. The falls, fed by the Mystery Glacier, drop about 330 feet over the lip of the Green River Valley, before cascading 2000 feet to the valley floor. There is a possibility that some of the 2000 foot ancillary drop could be legitimately classified as a waterfall, but it would most likely have to be segregated into a separate entry; the majority of the visible stream below the falls appears to be over steep lengthy talus slopes. The Mystery Glacier as well as a handful of smaller satellite glaciers keep the volume of Mystery Creek consistent through the majority of the year and ensure the falls are visually noteworthy through the dry season.

Our thoughts

Mystery Creek Falls would be among the best waterfalls in the Lower Mainland region of British Columbia if close access were possible, but since the only access would involve a river ford and a long, extremely difficult scramble up the drainage, the falls must be admired from afar and as a result are frequently overlooked.

Location and directions

The falls are best seen from two locations. Easiest is a gravel quarry on the east side of Highway 99, about 5 1/3 km south of the Rutherford Creek Hydro facility between Whistler and Pemberton. The road to the quarry is gated, so park along the highway (across the street) and walk up the road into the quarry for about 300 meters to where the falls are visible. The falls are also easily seen from about 2.5 km up the Soo River FSR.

Mystery Falls is shown in the center. Additional nearby waterfalls (if any) can be found in the list below.

Photography tips

A strong telephoto lens is necessary for anything resembling a quality shot of this waterfall. The falls have a northwesterly facing and will be mostly sunlit in the afternoon during the summer.
