Keyhole Falls

Keyhole Falls is the largest waterfall along the Lillooet River (perhaps the only significant waterfall along the Lillooet River) and is one of the most significant waterfalls in southern British Columbia by volume. The falls are thought to have been formed by an eruption of nearby Mount Meager, one of British Columbia's most violent volcanoes, which sent incredible volumes of erupted material into the Lillooet River valley. So much material was deposited so fast that it in effect fused into a solid mass of breccia. During later periods of the eruption further breccia was emplaced on top of the more solidified material. As the river over-topped the dammed valley, it easily eroded the less solid material and eventually cut a slot canyon into the harder rock-like deposits, forming the slot canyon from which the falls currently emerge and plunge around 100 feet into the much wider canyon below.

Though rough logging roads lead to within half a kilometer of the falls and a bridge spans the canyon a short distance above the falls, there is no direct access to the waterfall and the precarious and crumbly canyon rim don't allow easy views of the falls for bushwhackers. Further, due to a massive landslide that occurred in the Meager Creek valley in 2010, the entire upper Lillooet River drainage was closed off and the current state of access is not known.
