   Møre Og Romsdal, Norway

This waterfall has been surveyed, mapped and measured in person by the World Waterfall Database.
Photo of Heggurfossen Heggurfossen is a waterfall of considerable height but lesser significance found near the end of Tafjord. Heading in a high basin which features little (if any) permanent snow or ice, the Heggurelva meanders gently toward the edge of the Tafjord where it launches into a single horsetailing fall of at least 2,130 feet (650m) in height, first sliding steeply then entering into a sheer free-fall before striking the side of the cliff and slowly reverting to a less-vertical fall in a slight concave shape. As this occurs as one uninterrupted drop Heggurfossen is one of the tallest single-drop waterfalls on the planet. The stream feeding the falls isn’t terribly large but it doesn’t appear to be small enough to run dry during the late summer.

Viewing the falls is perhaps the biggest obstacle in visitation. The falls are plainly visible from a distance from near the town of Sylte, but as can be seen in the attached photographs a series of power lines are strung across the Tafjord between the town and falls, which will inevitably remain in the way. The best option for viewing the falls is by boat on the fjord itself.

Our thoughts

Heggurfossen is a waterfall we were quite aware of before we made our June 2011 trip to Norway, but as we didn’t bother researching its location before our visit we did not intend to survey it. Much to our surprise when we disembarked from the Eidsdal ferry and saw the falls in the distance, we made a B-line to find a good vista of the fall. Even if you don’t have the time to get close (via boat) its well worth watching this waterfall from a distance.

Location and directions

Heggurfossen is visible about halfway down the north wall of the Tafjord. The best viewpoint we found which was accessible by car was found along Route 93 between the towns of Sylte and Tafjord, about 2.45km east of Highway 63 in Sylte – there’s a large pullout on the right side of the road where the falls can be seen in the distance (the power lines will be in the way, so if you’re looking for a clearer photograph you may have to go elsewhere).

Heggurfossen is shown in the center. Additional nearby waterfalls (if any) can be found in the list below.
