This waterfall has been surveyed, mapped and measured in person by the World Waterfall Database.
Photo of Arras Cascade The north flank of 10,197 foot Arras Mountain produces a small stream melting from snowfields occupying a former glacial basin. As this stream intersects the valley of Icefall Brook, it cascades down a noteworthy 456 foot tall, 4-stepped waterfall. The upper and lowermost tiers are the largest, with the two middle drops being just a fraction of the size. Due to many factors - significant foreshortening and a narrow constriction in the stream channel primarily - the two middle tiers are mostly hidden from view when observed from the roadside vistas. The base of the falls is largely surrounded by thick brush but a close approach is not out of the question.

The falls appear at their best during the late spring and early summer months. The small basin which the stream heads in harbors some tiny glacial remnants but even the shading of the north face of the mountain can't trump the current climate's affect on glaciers of this size. As a result one can expect Arras Cascade to appear less significant later in the year, though chances of it running dry are slim.

HISTORY AND NAMES

  • Arras Cascade is the Proposed name of this waterfall

This waterfall is not known to have any colloquial or historical names, so we have named it after the mountain it sources from. We opted to designate it as "Cascade" rather than "Falls" simply because it sounds better to us, not as a referendum on the structure of the waterfall itself.

Our thoughts

The ease of access to this waterfall makes it much more prominent than any of the other falls encountered along the roads in this part of the Rockies, but with the monstrous waterfalls in Icefall Canyon looming nearby, this is really just a distraction - impressive though the waterfall may be.

Location and directions

Turn off the Trans-Canada Highway on Donald Road (signed for the town of Donald), then after a kilometer, turn left onto the Bush River FSR. Follow the Bush River Road for 63km then turn right onto the Valenciennes River FSR shortly after crossing the Valenciennes River. Follow the Valenciennes Road for 18km then bear left onto the Mons Creek - Icefall FSR and follow it for another 5km to where the road crosses the unnamed creek via a series of culverts. The falls will be visible upstream. The road network in this area is not frequently maintained and can be rough. High clearance vehicles with 4wd capabilities are recommended.

Arras Cascade is shown in the center. The 10 closest waterfalls within a 8km radius are shown as well (if any). Click any icon or see the list below for more information.

Photography tips

The falls face west and will remain well shaded during the early morning hours, but the sun will transit directly above the falls during the late morning hours in the summer, so its best to shoot in the afternoon.
