This waterfall had been a very elusive target for quite a while for us. We'd only seen two low-resolution shots from the base which showed what appeared to be a steep cascade. From examining the maps, we knew this couldn't be the case, and thanks to the above photograph from Juha Asikainen, we have confirmation that the falls are indeed a rather massive horsetail. This presents an odd question, however. Why, considering the close proximity (a matter of 500 meters or so) to neighboring Mardalsfossens, has this waterfall eluded widespread documentation? Our standing theory is that the Mard?la River, like the Mardals River, has been tapped for hydroelectric production, and as a result, the falls may only flow during the mid-June to mid-August release season that Mardalsfossen follows. Even so, visitors to Mardalsfossen should undoubtedly see this fall as well. Though the falls are also commonly known as Mard?lafossen, we're told the more appropriate method of naming is Nordre Mardalsfossen. |
