If you look in any World Book or Encyclopedia, you can easily find some sort
of reference to Waterfalls. Often, this will include
a list of the tallest and largest waterfalls of the
world. We've found that these lists are grossly
and consistently inaccurate. Most people are largely
unaware of this. So, the two of us, having spend
countless hours scrutinizing the internet for any information
regarding waterfalls we could find, finally decided
to do something about it. After some discussion
amongst the online waterfall enthusiast community, which
resulted in a largely indifferent note, we decided to
put something together ourselves. While we're
certain that there are probably hundreds of waterfalls
around the world that lay undocumented and maybe even
undiscovered, we are presenting here, the most accurate
list of the world's most significant waterfalls that
has ever been put together.
The Authors:
Bryan Swan is the creator and webmaster of Waterfalls
of the Pacific Northwest. Born and raised in Seattle,
Bryan has been interested in waterfalls for most of
his life. As early as he can remember, waterfalls
have been a tantalizing subject to hunt for on road
trips. The earliest memories he can remember are
of waterfalls in North Cascades National Park in Washington.
In 1998, in his Sophomore year in High School, Bryan
first learned HTML, as well as solidified his interest
in photography, and his website was quickly conceived,
and remains the largest waterfall website on the internet.
Bryan has recently graduated from college with a major
in Internet Multimedia Developement.
Dean Goss is the creator and webmaster of Waterfalls
of the Northeastern United States. Dean remembers
waterfalls from a very early age, when his parents took
him to Bristol Memorial Park in Bristol Vermont.
When he and his family moved to California in 1972,
he visited Yosemite National Park, and his waterfall
obsession was made permanent. After moving back
to Vermont, Dean continued to research any and every
possible source for information on waterfalls.
In 1996, his website was first put online, and has since
grown to one of the largest of its kind on the internet.
After much emailing and instant messaging, Dean and
Bryan finally met in person in Massachusetts in 2001.
After spending several days photographing waterfalls
in New England, and having discussed growing up compiling
similar information on the waterfalls of the world,
they decided to create a website to share the information
they'd gathered. This website was the result.
After meeting again in Vermont in 2003, and again in
Washington in 2004, the website and database have been
greatly expanded and turned into one of the most comprehensive
waterfall information sources available, and continues
to grow.
